While riding to work from New Brunswick rail station earlier this month, I was delighted to see that the city has repainted the cycle track on College Avenue!
As reported in New Brunswick patch here, the College Avenue cycleway was installed in 2017. Installing it required removing 50 on-street parking spaces, in one of the busiest areas of the city. Here is a map of where it is.
The cycle track meets all the necessary standards, and is separated from the regular traffic lanes by flex-posts. As far as I know, it is the only protected cycleway in Central New Jersey.
It is a bi-directional cycle track, which means that cyclists heading either north or south on College Avenue are on the same side of the road. This design has advantages and disadvantages. It provides space for a dedicated bus lane on the other side of College Avenue, which is heavily used by the Rutgers University shuttle buses. But as a cyclist it can be hard to merge in and out of the cycle track, and car drivers can be confused by cyclists riding on the ‘wrong’ side of the road.
Anyway, over the years since 2017, the paint that marks the cycle track had become worn and faded. The re-application of the green paint makes it look almost like-new again. It was a delight to see!
